Johnson City, Tenn. - The Stetson volleyball team (1-22, 0-7 Atlantic Sun) hung in tough on the road against a quality opponent but ultimately fell in four sets (25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 25-17) to host East Tennessee State (22-6, 5-1 A-Sun) Friday night at Brooks Gymnasium. Freshman outside hitter Kaley Melville (New Germany, Minn.) led the Hatters with 11 kills, eight digs and four blocks.
Sophomore libero Monique Russell (Phoenix, Ariz.) recorded 18 digs tonight to increase her season total to 376 and move up to sixth place on the Stetson single-season digs list. Junior outside hitter Kaylee Ream (Venice, Fla.) also had a strong match defensively with 16 digs.
Sophomore setter Kelli Carneal (Fredericksburg, Va.) finished with 27 assists, seven digs, four kills and four blocks; she is now just three helpers shy of 1,000 for her career. Freshman middle blocker Ellen Hawks (Austin, Texas) led the Hatters at the net with seven blocks.
Double-doubles from Alysa Long (13 kills, 10 blocks) and Megan Devine (13 kills, 11 digs) paced ETSU to the victory; Jamie Stancliff added 11 kills and Erin Ryan had 10 for the Bucs. Whitney Cogburn facilitated the ETSU offense with 47 assists, seven kills, five blocks and four digs while Kiley Tamblyn (23 digs) and Lauren Baufield (19 digs, eight kills) contributed strongly for the home team as well.
Stetson is back in action next Friday evening at the Edmunds Center when it hosts Belmont at 6 p.m. Senior Day will mark the end of the home schedule at 1 p.m. Saturday against defending A-Sun champions Lipscomb.
