Ellen Hawks (8) and Brandy Worlton (22) recorded 11 kills each against Belmont.

DeLand, Fla. - Freshman middle blocker Ellen Hawks (Austin, Texas) and senior right side Brandy Worlton (Crystal River, Fla.) led the Hatters with 11 kills apiece and important milestones were reached by two other players, yet the Stetson volleyball team dropped to 1-23 overall and 0-8 in the Atlantic Sun Conference with a four-set (19-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-19) loss to visiting Belmont at the Edmunds Center on Friday evening.  The Bruins improved to 12-13 overall and 6-2 in A-Sun play.

Sophomore setter Kelli Carneal (Fredericksburg, Va.) entered the match needing just three assists to pass the 1,000 mark for her career; she hit that number early in the first set and went on to finish with 38 assists, seven digs, four kills, three aces and three blocks.  Sophomore libero Monique Russell (Phoenix, Ariz.) ran her season total to 392 digs with 16 on the night, moving up to fifth place on the Stetson single-season digs list.  She needs just three more to surpass Dana Allen's fourth place total from 1991 and eight more to become just the fourth Hatter ever and the first since Melissa Roy in 1997 to record 400 digs in a single campaign.  Cindy Benge's program record of 455 digs, set in 1991, remains within reach, but Russell will need a strong finishing kick with just three matches remaining in 2010.

The 11 kills for Hawks represented a career-high; she and Worlton both recorded .474 hitting percentages with 11 kills and just two errors in 19 swings each.  Freshman outside hitter Kaley Melville (New Germany, Minn.) finished with eight kills and 14 digs.  Junior outside hitter Kaylee Ream (Venice, Fla.) contributed seven kills and eight digs while junior middle blocker Sam Freeman (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) had seven kills and four blocks.

Belmont's twin attacks of Maggie Johnson (19 kills, nine digs) and current A-Sun Player of the Week Kayla Albritton (18 kills, eight digs) proved too much for the Hatters to overcome; Tara Blood had 10 errorless kills and hit .556 as well.  Bruin setter Hannah Miranda (54 assists, 10 digs, four kills) reached double-double status with libero Jamie Lundstrom recording a team-high 15 digs.

Stetson will host defending A-Sun champion Lipscomb at 1 p.m. Saturday in its final home match of the season.  The Hatters will honor six seniors prior to their last home match: Worlton, Leslie Armstrong (Fern Park, Fla.), Stephanie Canfield (Panama City, Fla.), Sabrina Dodd (Ocala, Fla.), Kerrie Dunn (Deltona, Fla.) and Megan Stewart (St. Augustine, Fla.).  Live Stats and Hatter Vision will be available at GoHatters.com.
