Hatters Split Saturday, Two Named All-Tournament

DeLand, Fla. - Junior setter Kelli Carneal (Fredericksburg, Va.) and sophomore outside hitter Kaley Melville (New Germany, Minn.) earned All-Tournament Team honors as the Stetson volleyball team (2-3) concluded its home-opening Clarion Classic on Saturday with a 3-0 sweep of Savannah State and a 3-1 loss to Wofford at the Edmunds Center. The Hatters have now equaled their 2010 season wins total. Stetson, Wofford and Bethune-Cookman all split the tournament title with 2-1 records on the weekend.


Early Saturday morning, the Hatters cruised to a 25-14, 25-14, 25-13 win over Savannah State, outhitting the Lady Tigers by 360 points (.259 to -.101). Senior outside hitter Kaylee Ream (Venice, Fla.) paced Stetson with seven kills and nine digs on .429 hitting while Carneal contributed 25 assists, five kills, five digs, four blocks and three service aces.

Sophomore middle blocker Ellen Hawks (Austin, Texas) put up six kills and six blocks while freshman outside hitter Taylor Story (Plano, Texas) blasted six aces. All-Tournament Team selection Ashlee Butler had 11 assists for Savannah State.


In the afternoon match, Stetson got off to a good start with a 27-25 victory over Wofford in Set 1, but the Terriers would dig in and take the next three stanzas 25-23, 25-12, 25-18 to claim their share of the crown. Bethune-Cookman had beaten Wofford in three sets earlier in the day to make it a three-way tie with Stetson.

Melville racked up 17 kills on 40 swings, hitting .350 in the match, and added seven digs to lead the Stetson attack; Ream joined her at the top of the box score with an 11-kill, 10-dig double-double. Carneal handed out 40 assists and reached double-double status by adding 10 digs; she also had four kills and two aces against Wofford. Junior libero Monique Russell (Phoenix, Ariz.) collected a team-high 18 digs.

Wofford's potent block carried it to the victory, led by Arden Anderson and her remarkable 14-kill, 12-block double-double.  The Terriers outblocked Stetson 19-5 with Rachel Woodlee (10 kills, eight digs, seven blocks), Lucy Reser (six blocks) and Wendy Burnett (nine kills, five blocks) doing strong work at the net for the visitors as well. Also pacing Wofford were Amanda Liguori (11 kills, 11 digs), Bekah Dorsey (25 assists, 11 digs), Tara Gough (19 assists) and Reagan Styles (19 digs).

The Hatters return to action next weekend as they head to Daytona Beach for Bethune-Cookman's Holiday Inn Resort Invitational. Stetson meets Hampton (12:30 pm) and Samford (6:00 pm) on Friday and faces Florida Atlantic at 4:00 pm Saturday. will link to Live Stats if available.
