Daytona Beach, Fla. - The Stetson volleyball team (2-7) wrapped up the Bethune-Cookman Holiday Inn Resort Invitational with a disappointing five-set loss to Florida Atlantic (2-8) on Saturday at Moore Gymnasium. The Hatters led two sets to none before falling 23-25, 18-25, 25-21, 25-21, 15-10.
Sophomore outside hitter Kaley Melville (New Germany, Minn.) registered a career high-tying 18 kills and 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the season while junior setter Kelli Carneal (Fredericksburg, Va.) also reached double-double status for the fourth time in 2011 with season-high totals of 43 assists and 13 digs. The assist number for Carneal was just two shy of her career high, also set at Moore Gymnasium in a five-set win over Bethune-Cookman on November 10, 2010.
Freshman outside hitter Taylor Johnson (Omaha, Neb.) hit .444 with eight errorless kills for her finest performance to date in a Stetson uniform; leading the Hatters defensively were junior libero Monique Russell (Phoenix, Ariz.) with 13 digs and senior outside hitter Kaylee Ream (Venice, Fla.) with 10 digs and seven kills.
Stetson out-killed FAU 56-48 in the match, but in similar fashion to last Saturday's loss to Wofford, blocks at the net cost the Hatters dearly. The Owls registered 17 blocks, led by Chandler Hatton and her 11-kill, 11-block double-double. Georgia Robinson led FAU's offense with 13 kills while Madison Lang (35 assists, seven digs), Cintia Nightingale (19 digs) and Thacilli Pereira (17 digs, six kills, five aces) supported Florida Atlantic's rally from a deep hole to win the match.
The Hatters now turn their attention to Atlantic Sun Conference action, which begins next weekend at the Edmunds Center as North Florida (Friday, 5:00 pm) and Jacksonville (Saturday, 3:00 pm) will visit Stetson. Live Stats and Hatter Vision with Bill Topping will be available for both matches at GoHatters.com.
