DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson volleyball team improved to 9-15 on the season and claimed a three-match winning streak for the first time since November 2007 with a 25-20, 25-16, 25-5 sweep of visiting Bethune-Cookman (10-17) Tuesday evening at the Edmunds Center. The Hatters swept the season series 3-0 from the Lady Wildcats and improved to 48-4 all-time against their Volusia County rivals. With nine wins on the year, the Hatters have now surpassed their combined win total from the 2008, 2009 and 2010 seasons.
The Hatters hit .359 on the night to B-CU's .000 and dominated the visitors at the net (7-1 in blocks) and the service line (7-2 in aces). Stetson hit .444 without an error (12-0-27) in the final set, ending the match on an 11-0 run for its most lopsided set victory of the year.
Sophomore middle blocker Ellen Hawks (Austin, Texas) utilized the slide attack to knock down nine kills on .471 hitting (9-1-17) with a match-high five blocks to lead Stetson, which also got eight kills and eight digs from senior outside hitter Kaylee Ream (Venice, Fla.) and seven errorless kills (7-0-18, .389) from sophomore outside hitter Kaley Melville (New Germany, Minn.). Junior setter Kelli Carneal (Fredericksburg, Va.) handed out 27 assists while junior libero Monique Russell (Phoenix, Ariz.) had 12 digs and four aces.
Janeen Davis led B-CU with a match-high 10 kills, adding eight digs. Aubrianna Curtis (23 assists) and Jennifer Jimenez (nine digs) paced the Lady Wildcats in those two categories.
The Hatters host Senior Day in their regular season home finale this Saturday at 3:00 pm against A-Sun rival Mercer. Ream and senior middle blocker Sam Freeman (Gulf Breeze, Fla.), who has missed the entire season with a leg injury, will be making their final career appearances at the Edmunds Center.
