Caroline Carlton and Molly Locke combined for 29 kills for Mercer as the Bears defeated Stetson 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-19) in an Atlantic Sun Conference match Saturday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.

Kaley Melville led the Hatters (4-24, 0-11 A-Sun) with nine kills, while Ellen Hawks and Cailyn Prewitt each added seven kills.

Mercer hit .394 as a team (47-8-99), as Carlton (.522) and Locke (.667) each posted attack percentages above .500.

“Mercer did what we expected, they played well, and unfortunately we failed to follow our gameplan,” Stetson head coach Tim Loesch said.  “We did not block well, and we did not make good selections on who to set at certain times.  That made it tough.  But the girls played hard, they put up a good battle.

“I thought Kaley Melville, Ellen Hawks, and Cailyn Prewitt all did good some things for us,” Loesch said.  “We struggled passing at times today, but that was because Mercer was serving us tough, but we have to learn to handle that a bit better.”

Kayla Weller recorded 16 assists, five digs and four aces for the Hatters.  Monique Russell picked up 13 digs.  Catherine Coston had three kills on four attempts for a .750 attack percentage.

“Kayla had a very good day serving, but no one else had any aces for us.  That’s great for her, but we need to have some other girls step up.  That’s kind of the story we have had all year.  Three or four girls contribute, and the other ones struggle.  But give credit to Mercer, they were more consistent, and they followed their gameplan better than we did.”

Stetson will visit Jacksonville at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
