DeLand, Fla. ľ The Atlantic Sun Conference office has announced that Stetson’s A.J. Smith has been named Player of the Week for the first time in his career. The junior point guard out of Cocoa, Fla. (Cocoa High School) is the first Hatter to earn the honor since last season when Garfield Blair was named on January 22, 2008.
The Pre-Engineering major led the Hatters to a weekend sweep of Nashville conference foes Lipscomb and Belmont. He averaged 27.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2.0 steals in the two wins.
Smith scored 22 points against Lipscomb on Saturday night and followed with a career-high 32 point performance against Belmont on Monday. He scored 13 of his 22 points against Lipscomb in the second half and overtime, and 23 of his 31 points against Belmont in the second half.
Against the Bruins he also pulled down a career-high nine rebounds and added five assists and four steals. Smith shot 50% from the field (9-of-18) and from beyond the arc (6-for-12), and was 8-for-9 from the free throw line. His twelve 3-point attempts in the game tied a school record.
Smith led the team to its first win over Belmont since the 2004-05 season. He is just the second player in A-Sun history to score 32 points or more against Belmont since they joined the league eight seasons ago.
Smith is currently 15th in the A-Sun in scoring at 12.7 points per game, 3rd in free throw percentage at .821, and 8th in assists at 3.50 per game
