DeLand, Fla. After coming up two points short last month in Farmville (78-76), the Hatters led tonight’s rematch from start to finish and defeated Longwood University 68-60 in the Edmunds Center.

Stetson opened the game with a 13-5 run and led by as many as 16 points in the first half. After leading 33-23 at the half, the Hatters allowed the Lancers to get as close as 38-31 with 15:25 remaining in the game. Stetson regained control and pushed the lead back up to the game-high of 16 points on a powerful slam dunk by Kris Thomas (Lithonia, Ga./Dunwoody HS) at the 12:30 mark.

Sophomore point guard A.J. Smith (Cocoa, Fla./Cocoa HS) led the team in scoring for the 6th time this season. He shot 4-of-11 from the field, 3-for-4 from beyond the arc and 7-of-8 from the line for 18 points. Junior forward Garfield Blair (Orlando, Fla./Boone HS) was right behind Smith with 16 points shooting 6-for-7 from the field and 4-of-6 from the line. Earlier this afternoon Blair was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week.

The Lancers would not go away and made a late run at the #1 defense in the A-Sun (69.9 ppg). With 8:47 left to play Durann Neil made a layup to reduce the Stetson lead into single digits. After some back-and forth play Longwood’s Lamar Barrett knocked down a jumper and the advantage was just four with 57 seconds on the clock. The pressure subsided when Blair and Smith combined for the game’s next six points. Longwood’s EJ Dawson hit an uncontested layup with eight seconds remaining and Stetson won by eight.

Also scoring in double-figures for the Hatters was junior center Tim Lang (Victoria, Australia) who hit for 12 points and a game-high 7 rebounds. Lang has been playing well of late averaging 7.5 points and 6.3 rebounds in the last four games.

Tonight’s win was the Hatters’ fifth consecutive and the seventh in the past nine games. Stetson also remains unbeaten at home this season at 6-0. Combined with a 4-0 mark at the end of last season, the Hatters are currently riding a 10-game home winning streak. It is the longest home-winning streak since the 1980-81 season when Stetson enjoyed a 13-0 run. The current 10-0 stretch surpasses the team’s 9-0 streak from 1986-87.

The Hatters now hit the road for a pair of A-Sun games in North Carolina. This week Stetson takes on Gardner-Webb on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. and Campbell on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Both games can be heard on Hatter Vision Audio with Murray Miller and Harry Arnold calling the action. Subscribers can also see the games through an A-Sun TV feed on Hatter Vision. Remember, you can always bring up two windows allowing you to watch the game on A-Sun TV and listen to Murray and Harry on Hatter Vision.
