DeLand, Fla. Hatters head coach Derek Waugh recently signed a contract that will keep him in Deland through the 2009-1010 season. A conference record of 11-5 and a second place finish in the Atlantic Sun this season sealed the deal for Stetson Athletics Director Jeff Altier.

"I feel good about the improvement the team made and I look forward to working with Derek in years to come," Altier said.

The team’s conference finish this season tied the second best in school history.

In the past three years, the Hatters have made impressive strides on the hardwood.  They have won 26 of 38 home games including 23 of their last 30, and 14 of 17 games against in-state conference opponents. The team also h had a road win streak of six, a home win streak of 10 and an overall win streak of nine, all of which are tops in the last 20 years of Stetson basketball.

All the while, the program has taken its academic achievement to a new level, producing 15 different Academic All-Conference performers since 2005.

“I am really happy to be at Stetson”, said Waugh. “I work with a phenomenal coaching staff and the group of players that we have are special bunch.  They succeed on the court and in the classroom and they work their tails off for the program.  The recent success that we have had is a direct tribute to them.”

Next season Stetson will be one of the conference favorites since forward Garfield Blair (16.4 points, 5.9 rebounds) and guard A.J. Smith (11.3 points) will lead a veteran team comprised of upperclassmen.
