Stetson's top scorer A.J. Smith (Cocoa, Fla.) who is averaging 14.8 points, was forced to sit out the game after tweaking a previous ankle injury earlier in the week. It was the first game this season Smith has not been in the starting lineup.
"When you lose your leading scorer it doesn't help", said Stetson head coach Derek Waugh.
As it turned out the story of the game was inside play. Campbell was dominant inside outscoring Stetson 40-14 in the paint and 10-4 in second-chance opportunities.
Naburgs scored a career-high 13 points for the second game in a row to lead the Hatters in the scorebook. He was 4-of-9 from the field and 3-for-7 from beyond the arc. Patterson was 4-of-12 from the field and 2-for-7 from long range to finish with 11 points.
With 12:51 remaining in the game Mark Lohuis (Vero Beach, Fla.) hit a free throw and then went on to score five more points on a jumper and a 3-pointer. After another free throw, this time by Shawn Bowen (Montreal, Quebec), the Hatters reduced its deficit to eight points.
After four and a half minutes of back and forth play the lead remained at eight points with 6:38 remaining. That was when Campbell turned up the heat, went on a 15-4 run and took home an 18-point win.
Jonathan Rodriguez (Miami, Fla.) led the Camels with 24 points after hitting 7-of-17 from the field and a perfect 9-for-9 from the line. Miles Taylor (Pensacola, Fla.) added 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for Campbell. Ridge Graham (Stuart, Fla.) and Lohuis were Stetson's top rebounders with seven each.
As a team Stetson shot 32.0% (16-for-50) overall from the field as well as 3-point territory (8-for-25). Campbell shot 46.2% (24-of-52) and 28.6% (2-of-7) from downtown.
"It was a tough game", said Waugh. "I saw some bright spots. Our younger guys are getting some playing time and getting better every game. We'll get there."
For most of the first half Stetson kept the game close. The score was tied three times and neither team led by more than three points until 8:21 when Jonathan Rodriguez hit a pair of free throws to give the Camels a five point lead at 19-14. The free throws started a 12-2 run that put the visitors up by 13 points with 1:05 left in the period.
The first half ended with a Ridge Graham layup, a pair of foul shots by Brandon Williams, and then a jumper by Campbell's William Kossangue with :02 seconds on the clock to give the Camels a 31-20 lead heading into the locker room.
