|Idstrom, Evans, Drabyn Join Men's Basketball Staff|
DeLand, Fla. - Stetson Head Men's Basketball Coach Casey Alexander has announced the members of his inaugural coaching staff. Roger Idstrom, Dwight Evans and Steve Drabyn will help Alexander lead the Hatters into the 2011-12 season.
Idstrom comes to Stetson from Belmont, where he served on staff with Alexander and was involved with scouting, recruiting, video exchange and oversaw academic matters. Under Idstrom's leadership in the latter endeavor, Belmont men's basketball was one of the nation's highest-performing teams in the classroom with several Academic All-American players. Idstrom spent 11 years at Belmont and helped guide the Bruins to four Atlantic Sun Conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances, including 2010-11.
A 1989 graduate of Mars Hill College, Idstrom spent time on staff at his alma mater as well as at UNC Asheville, Montreat and Wabash Valley College before going to Gardner-Webb from 1998-2000. G-WU went 25-5 in 1999-00 and made the NCAA Division II tournament for the first time in school history. Idstrom and his wife Jennifer have twin sons Dane and Logan.
ALEXANDER ON IDSTROM
"When Stetson became a reality for me, the first thing I did was call Roger to see if he would come along. Roger will play a significant role in every decision we make on and off the floor; he is someone I totally trust and to have someone I've already worked with for 11 years will prove invaluable. Roger is an excellent worker, highly organized and always ready to do his part no matter what the task."
Evans spent the 2010-11 season as associate head coach at South Carolina State and is a 23-year veteran of the coaching ranks. The move to the Sunshine State will be nothing new for him after a season at FIU and two stints totaling eight years at UCF. While with the Knights, Evans helped lead UCF to 122 victories and three NCAA Tournament appearances. A specialist in working with post players, he recruited and developed UCF forward Jermaine Taylor into one of the best frontcourt players in the nation and the 32nd pick in the 2009 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets.
From 1999-2002 Evans was on staff at South Alabama, a time in which the Jaguars had two 20-win seasons and claimed a Sun Belt Conference title and NIT appearance. A team captain and All-Conference/District performer at Birmingham-Southern College in 1983-84, he was on staff at his alma mater when the Panthers (35-2, 141-25 in five seasons) claimed the 1995 NAIA national championship and was inducted into the B-SC Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002. Evans began his coaching career at Missouri from 1988-92 under Hall of Fame Head Coach Norm Stewart; the Tigers won two Big Eight tournament titles, one regular season crown and reached the 1989 Sweet 16 during Evans's time in Columbia. A native of New York, NY, Evans graduated from Birmingham-Southern in 1984 with a degree in Business Administration.
ALEXANDER ON EVANS
"I've known Dwight for 15 years and I'm really excited that he's returning to Central Florida to work with us at Stetson. His experience and previous success will be a real asset for this program if we want to move into the top tier of this league. Dwight is a real professional in everything he does and he will be a real mentor for the young men in our program."
Drabyn moves into his first NCAA Division I coaching assignment after a highly successful playing career at Belmont and seven years of Division II and high school coaching experience. He scored 1,237 points in four seasons at Belmont from 2000-04 and led the NCAA in free throw percentage (78-82, .951) as a junior. An A-Sun player of the Week and A-Sun All-Tournament Team honoree, Drabyn has also coached at Sewanee (University of the South), Lees-McRae and Carmel (Ind.) High School.
ALEXANDER ON DRABYN
"Steve is a basketball purist and his excitement for the game will be contagious among our players. He does a great job on the floor and will play a significant role in workouts, practice and scouting. I've said many times that Steve sets the bar high for what it means to be a teammate. His selflessness and desire to see the team do well will be a great model for our players."
ALEXANDER ON THE STAFF
"I couldn't be more pleased with this staff and the quality of these assistant coaches. We're very lucky to have such an experienced and successful group of men to lead this program. Having known each of them on a personal level for many years, I know they will give Stetson their very best and do nothing but enhance the reputation of this exceptional institution."
