|Men's Basketball Hosts Lipscomb Saturday on ESPN3|
The Stetson men's basketball team (8-10, 5-2), winners of four straight and sitting atop the Atlantic Sun Conference standings after Thursday's win, returns to action on Saturday hosting Lipscomb (7-10, 2-4) in a 3:15 p.m. contest broadcast live on ESPN3*.
"The NKU win was not a thing of beauty, but I'm proud we didn't panic," Stetson head coach Casey Alexander said of Thursday night's victory. "We'll take double figure wins any time." He went on to reference the team's current place in the A-Sun by saying, "Standings are only relevant when the season is over, although I am glad Hatter fans have some wins to celebrate."
Stetson fans have had eight wins to celebrate, which is just one victory shy of matching last year's mark of nine wins. That was, in fact, the best record for the Hatters since 2008-09, and Stetson still has 11 regular season games remaining on the schedule.
There is still a long way to go though, as Lipscomb comes to DeLand on Saturday after a huge 87-78 overtime victory over Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday. Losing five-of-six before making the trip to Florida, the Bisons are now 2-4 in league play and 7-10 overall in 2012-13.
"Lipscomb showed everybody what they're capable of in their win at FGCU," Alexander said. "To rally from two poor performances and get that road win is impressive. Even more impressive was the rally within the game when they recovered from large deficits on multiple occasions."
Deonta Alexander, who is one of four Bisons averaging in double figures this season, scored a career-high 29 points against the Eagles on Thursday. Three-time A-Sun Newcomer of the Week Stephen Hurt finished the night with 16 points and 12 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season.
"Alexander was huge for them in the second half and we're aware of what he can do because his previous career-high was at the Edmunds Center last year," Coach Alexander said of the Lipscomb guard. "Hurt's numbers are as impressive as any player in the league. He's a real force down low."
Lipscomb holds a slight 11-10 advantage in the all-time series between these two teams, which dates back to a 67-59 Bison victory in DeLand on Dec. 19, 1962. The Hatters hold a decisive 8-3 advantage though, when in the friendly confines of home. Lipscomb has won the last three meetings, including bother overtime games in 2011-12.
