Buies Creek, N.C. The Stetson men’s basketball team (13-16, 9-11 Atlantic Sun) ended the regular season on a down note with its fourth consecutive loss, falling 73-56 at Campbell Friday night.  The Hatters were plagued by poor offense early as the team scored just four points in the first 12:30 of the first half.  Senior guard/forward Garfield Blair (Orlando, Fla.) scored 17 points in his final career regular season contest.

Down as many as 22 points in the first half, Stetson refused to give in, battling to within 35-20 by halftime.  A 13-5 run coming out of the locker room helped the Hatters close within seven with 14:06 to play, but as would prove the case throughout the second period, the Camels (14-15, 11-9 A-Sun) answered each of Stetson’s bursts with big baskets of their own.

Stetson twice came as close as five points, the second time on a Tim Lang (Victoria, Australia) jumper that made it 53-48 with 4:23 to go.  The Camels came back with a Lorne Merthie basket and a dagger three-pointer from Junard Hartley to extend the lead back to double digits with 3:11 remaining.  The Hatters scored just three points the rest of the game.

Lang scored nine points as Stetson’s second-leading scorer; junior forward Sheldon Oliver (Orlando, Fla.) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.  Merthie led all scorers with 19 points; Kyle Vejraska and Chris Reynolds scored 13 each for the Camels.

Tonight’s loss dropped the Hatters into seventh place in the Atlantic Sun conference standings, thus ensuring the #7 seed and a Wednesday evening date with the league’s #2 seed, who will be either Belmont, ETSU or Jacksonville.  Tip-off time from Lipscomb’s Allen Arena in the A-Sun Quarterfinals will be 8:30 p.m. Central, 9:30 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, March 4.  A-Sun.TV will webcast the game.
