Bisons Hold Off Hatters 57-52
January 16, 2006
Nashville, Tenn. -- Eddie Ard scored 22 points including 16 in the second-half as Lipscomb defeated visiting Stetson 57-52 in an Atlantic Sun Conference game Monday evening at the Allen Arena.
One year after pulling off a 15-point second-half comeback against Lipscomb, the Hatters (2-13, 2-5 A-Sun) nearly came back from 13 down on Monday, but two big free throws by Trey Williams with 25.2 seconds left help preserve the victory for the Bisons (10-6, 6-2 A-Sun).
'We fouled the right guy, percentage wise,' Hatters head coach Derek Waugh said of Williams, who was shooting just 58 percent from the line coming into the game.? 'That was clutch the way he knocked down those two free throws.? I was pleased with the fact that we got back to stealing the ball, we got back to holding the opponent to a lower shooting percentage, and although we didn't outrebound them, we held them to eight offensive rebounds where they had been averaging 14 offensive boards.'
Three-pointers by Michael Lusk, Eddie Ard, and Brian Fisk sparked Lipscomb to an early 11-0 lead.? The Hatters went scoreless over the first five minutes of the game, but soon responded with a 12-0 run of their own to tie the score at 16.? The Bisons answered with a 7-0 run of their own and led 29-22 at the half.
Lipscomb extended the lead to as many as 13 in the second half before Stetson mounted a rally.? Garfield Blair's three-point play at 10:53 cut the lead to six, and Karl Hollingsworth's three-pointer pulled Stetson to within four at 5:59.? Ard's basket and foul with four minutes left pushed the lead back to seven, but a lay-up by Blair and another three by Hollingsworth made it a 52-50 game with 1:12 left.? After the teams traded points on their next possessions, Stetson fouled Williams on an inbounds pass setting up his two key free throws.
Stetson's final two field goal attempts missed their mark.
Anthony Register had 13 points to lead the Hatters, while Karl Hollingsworth added 10 points and nine rebounds.?
'I was proud of the way we met physicality with physicality tonight,' Waugh said.? 'Karl Hollingsworth was fantastic and needs to play like that every time.? Lipscomb is playing extremely well right now and we were just a couple of plays away from winning this game.'
Fisk hit three three-pointers and finished with 17 points for the Bisons, who won for the fifth time in their last six games.
The Hatters, meanwhile, hit the midway point in the season with just two victories, both coming at home.? Stetson has dropped 15 straight road games dating back to last year's victory at Lipscomb.
After playing 12 of their first 15 games on the road, Stetson will begin a three-game homestand on Thursday night vs. A-Sun newcomer ETSU.? Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
