January 30, 2006
Kennesaw, Ga. ' E.J. Gordon scored 20 points and Kris Thomas added a career-high 15 as Stetson defeated host Kennesaw State 80-68 in an Atlantic Sun Conference game Monday night at the KSU Convocation Center.
The Hatters (4-16, 4-8 A-Sun) shot 51 percent from the floor and completed a road-trip sweep against two of the upper echelon teams in the league.
'These are two really big wins for us,' Hatters head coach Derek Waugh said.? 'We shot the ball better, we had multiple players step up, and I never saw our heads drop in two games.? We went through some adverse situations, and if we can play through those situations as we did on this trip, we can be pretty good.'
Thomas scored eight straight points in the second half on a pair of three pointers?and a dunk to turn a one-point deficit into a seven-point Hatter lead.? Stetson later extended the lead to 13 before the Owls closed the gap to four with under a minute to play.? But a lay-up by J.J. Hirst and eight consecutive made free throws helped preserve the victory for the Hatters.
The Owls (11-11, 9-4 A-Sun) dropped their third game in a row despite a career-high 31-point performance from Ronnell Wooten.? Wooten hit seven three-pointers and shot 12-of-21 from the floor.? The Hatters, however, held KSU's leading scorer Golden Ingle to just five points.
Anthony Register, playing in his 100th career game, finished with 11 points and Karl Hollinsworth chipped in 10.? Gordon grabbed nine rebounds, including the 600th of his career.
The Hatters owned a 31-28 advantage on the boards.
Stetson will begin a three-game homestand on Thursday night against Savannah State.? Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
