Stetson Wins Third Straight, 70-60 Over Savannah State
February 2, 2006

DeLand, Fla. ' E.J. Gordon scored 17 points and added eight rebounds as Stetson eased its way to a 70-60 victory over visiting Savannah State in a non-conference game Thursday night at the Edmunds Center.

With the victory, the Hatters (5-16) extended their winning streak to a season-high three games in a row.? The Tigers fell to 2-22, despite a 32-point night by junior Javon Randolph.

'Going to ETSU [last week] and getting a win gave us a nice burst of confidence,' Hatters head coach Derek Waugh said.? 'Confidence is a hard thing to get but when you have it, it can help you win.? There has been a nice, positive vibe around the program recently.'

In the first-ever meeting between the two schools, Stetson nearly led from start to finish, except for an early 3-2 deficit.? The Hatters owned a 13-point halftime lead after Eric Diaz sunk a three-pointer in the closing seconds of the first period.

Stetson led by as many as 23 in the second half with 6:18 to go, but the Tigers finished the game on an 18-5 run to cut the final margin to just 10 points.

'I was disappointed with the way we finished the game,' Waugh said.? 'I didn't think we were focused and I didn't think we played hard.'

Gordon played just 18 minutes after picking up his fourth foul early in the second half.

'I thought E.J. has played really well in his last two games, that he has really been focused,' Waugh said.? 'He was the one guy tonight who looked totally ready to play.'

Anthony Register added 10 points for the Hatters, while Gabe McMillen and Kris Thomas each chipped in nine.?

'We spread the minutes around fairly well and hopefully we will be rested going into the weekend,' Waugh said.

Randolph was the only Tiger to reach double figures.? He shot 12-for-16 from the floor, including a 5-for-6 performance from behind the arc, and made all three of his free throw attempts.

Savannah State shot 45 percent for the game while Stetson shot just 37 percent.? The Hatters did own a 38-30 advantage on the boards, but missed 14 free throw attempts in the game.

Stetson will return to conference play and continue its three-game homestand on Saturday night against Belmont.? Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
