Belmont Shoots Past Stetson 75-68
February 4, 2006

DeLand, Fla. ' Justin Herndon led four Bruins in double figures with 17 points as Belmont defeated host Stetson 75-68 in an Atlantic Sun Conference game Saturday night at the Edmunds Center.

Boomer Herndon added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Bruins (12-9, 10-4 A-Sun), who stayed within a half-game of first place in the league standings.? The Hatters (5-17, 4-9 A-Sun) had their three-game winning streak snapped.

Belmont hit 11 three-pointers in the game, including five in a row during a key second half stretch that saw the Bruins lead jump from five to 14.? The Hatters never got the lead under double digits until the final minute of regulation.

'They are the type of team that succeeds when they shoot the ball well, and they tend to struggle when they don't,' Hatters head coach Derek Waugh said.? 'Tonight they just shot the ball well and they hit their free throws down the stretch.'

Stetson took an early 7-3 lead, but Andy Wicke hit the first of five three-pointers to start Belmont on a 11-2 run.? The Hatters fought back to tie the game at 20, but never enjoyed the lead the rest of the night.

The loss spoiled a milestone night for E.J. Gordon, who became the sixth player in school history and 20th player in A-Sun history to record 1500 career points.? Gordon finished with 15 points and five steals while playing in his 100th career game.? Gabe McMillen and Kris Thomas each scored 11, and Garfield Blair chipped in 10.

'We're not going to let this one loss ruin our confidence,' Blair said.

Belmont, winners of four in a row and seven out of eight, shot 49 percent from the field and outrebounded Stetson by 37 to 25.? The Hatters shot 45 percent from the floor but hit just 6-of-11 free throw attempts.

'I thought we were aggressive getting to the basket the whole night, but unfortunately we only got to the free throw line 11 times,' Waugh said.

Stetson will close its three-game homestand against A-Sun leader Lipscomb at 7 p.m. Monday night.
