Stetson Knocks Off First-Place Lipscomb
DeLand, Fla. ' Stetson shot season-highs of 62 percent from the floor and 75 percent from behind the arc en route to an impressive 85-67 victory over league-leading Lipscomb in an Atlantic Sun Conference game Monday night at the Edmunds Center.
E.J. Gordon scored 23 points and Anthony Register added 20 as the Hatters (6-17, 5-9 A-Sun) won for the fourth time in their last five games.? The Bisons (14-8, 10-4 A-Sun) lost for the just the second time in their last 10 games.
'It was a nice win against a real good Lipscomb team,' Hatters head coach Derek Waugh said.? 'Finally, we shot the ball well at home.? Anthony and E.J. carried us in the first half, and in the second half we had a lot of guys pitch in offensively and defensively.'
Stetson ran out to an early 18-11 lead, but the Bisons answered with a 12-0 run to grab a 23-18 lead.? The Hatters responded with a 15-2 run of their own and led 35-32 at halftime.
The Bisons regained the lead briefly in the second half before Stetson took control.? With the score knotted at 47, a Garfield Blair lay-in and a Register three-pointer ignited a 9-0 Stetson run.? The Hatters went to score 50 second-half points behind 18-26 shooting (69.2 percent) from the field and 5-6 shooting (83.3 percent) from behind the arc en route to the 18-point victory.? Freshman Kris Thomas hit three three-pointers in the final six minutes including back-to-back treys that broke the game open.
The Hatters 85 points was also a season-high.
Eddie Ard led the Bisons with a game-high 25 points on 10-13 shooting.? Brian Fisk hit four threes and finished with 19 points, while Cameron Robinson chipped in 10.
Gordon and Register both had strong shooting nights for the Hatters, as did Gabe McMillen who finished with 12 points.? Blair added 10 points off the bench.
Lipscomb, which defeated Stetson 57-52 in Nashville earlier this year, dropped a half-game behind ETSU in the league standings.
Stetson will visit Mercer on Friday night in the CSS-TV/A-Sun Game of the Week.? Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
Notes: The Hatters remained perfect all-time against Lipscomb in DeLand (4-0) ... Stetson's last three A-Sun wins have come against teams that have led the A-Sun at some point this season ... The game started with two technical free throws awarded to Stetson when Lipscomb's Joe Peters dunked during pregame warm-ups ...
