Stetson Stays Red Hot, Downs FAU 56-49
February 12, 2006

DeLand, Fla. ' E.J. Gordon recorded a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds as Stetson defeated visiting Florida Atlantic 56-49 in an Atlantic Sun Conference game Sunday afternoon at the Edmunds Center.

Anthony Register added 15 points as the Hatters (8-17, 7-9 A-Sun) won for the sixth time in their last seven games.? The Owls (11-12, 10-6 A-Sun), who had defeated Stetson by 15 points earlier this year, have dropped five out of seven.

'Today was a grind-it-out, ugly game,' Hatters head coach Derek Waugh said.? 'But after shooting so well against Lipscomb and Mercer in our last two outings, it was nice to win a game where we weren't quite clicking offensively.'

A low-scoring first half featured just 35 total points as Stetson battled its way to a 20-15 halftime lead.? Florida Atlantic trimmed the lead to one early in the second half, but the Hatters pushed the lead back up to 10 with 8:10 to go on a bucket by Karl Hollingsworth.? The Owls cut the lead to four Paul Graham's lay-up with 4:51 to go and had a chance to get within two on the next possession, but Brent Crews missed a dunk and the rebound went in the Hatters' favor.

'The momentum was going our way, but after that [missed dunk] it went the other direction,' FAU coach Matt Doherty said.? 'But I think the big thing tonight was turnovers.? Stetson is active and they play hard, but against the zone you can't have that many turnovers (17).'

The Hatters held on for the victory despite seven missed free throws down the stretch.

Gordon continued to put up lofty numbers as the Hatter senior added five assists and five steals to go with his ninth career double-double.? He shot 8-for-11 from the floor including three resounding dunks.? Gordon's 18 points also moved him into third place among Stetson's all-time leading scorers.? Register, meanwhile, picked up career point no. 1300.

'I think if you look at E.J., Anthony, Karl, and Gabe [McMillen], they all came ready to play,' Waugh said.? 'Earlier in the season we had one or two guys playing well on a given night, but we couldn't get more than that.? Thankfully more guys have stepped up as the year has gone on.'

Rodney Webb recorded a double-double for FAU with 11 points and 10 rebounds.? Carlos Monroe also added 11 points off the bench.? The Owls, which had been shooting a league-best 50 percent from the field in conference games, shot just 35 percent on Sunday.? The Hatters were even-steven at 50 percent (20-for-40).

Winners of three straight on the road, Stetson will begin a three-game road trip this Wednesday night at Savannah State.? The Hatters return to conference action next weekend at Jacksonville and North Florida.
