Stetson Survives Savannah State 62-53

Savannah, Ga. ' Stetson overcame a late four-point deficit to defeat host Savannah State 62-53 in a non-conference game Wednesday night at Tiger Arena.
The Hatters (9-17) outscored the Tigers 22-9 over the final four minutes to capture their fourth win in a row and their seventh victory in their last eight games.
The Tigers (2-26) dropped their eighth in a row.
'Give Savannah State a lot of credit,' Hatters head coach Derek Waugh said.? 'With their record, they could have easily mailed it in but they didn't.? They came out with a great game plan and really controlled the tempo.'
With the victory, the Hatters completed a two-game season sweep over the Tigers and won their fourth straight road game for the first time since 1991.
Stetson led 28-25 at the half but scored just four points over the next 10 minutes to fall behind 38-32.? The Hatters still trailed by four, 44-40, with 3:40 remaining when Eric Diaz connected on Stetson's first three-pointer of the game.? Moments later, Gabe McMillen hit another three-pointer to put Stetson ahead 46-44.? The Hatters continued on a 13-0 run to put the game out of reach.
'When it came down to the end, Eric hit a huge three, Gabe hit a huge three, and we didn't panic on defense,' Waugh said.? 'I think winning a game like this at this time of year will really help us out in the long run.'
E.J. Gordon led the Hatters with 20 points and 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double performance.? Anthony Register and McMillen each added 10 points.
Javon Randolph scored 15 points to lead the Tigers.
Savannah State outrebounded Stetson 32-27 but shot just 30 percent from the floor.? Stetson shot a shade under 50 percent (48.5).
The game kicked off a stretch of three road games in a span of five days for the Hatters.? Stetson returns to conference action at 7 p.m. Friday night at North Florida.
Notes: Stetson won its fourth in a row on the road for the first time since 1990-91 ... The Hatters have won seven out of eight for the first time since 2000-01 ... E.J. Gordon has at least one free throw in 41 straight games ... The Hatters have held five teams under 60 points this year ... Stetson improved to 6-0 when outshooting its opponent and 8-2 when leading at the half.
