Stetson Wins Fifth Straight, 81-77 Over UNF in Overtime

Jacksonville, Fla. ' Gabe McMillen hit a key three-pointer late in overtime to help lift Stetson to an 81-77 victory over host North Florida in an Atlantic Sun Conference game Friday night at UNF Arena.

E.J. Gordon and Anthony Register each scored 19 points as the red-hot Hatters (10-17, 8-9 A-Sun) won their fifth game in a row and claimed their eighth victory in their last nine games.

'This was a real big win,' Hatters head coach Derek Waugh said.? 'It was a great team effort and we had a bunch of guys step up tonight.'

The Ospreys (6-20, 3-15 A-Sun) dropped their fifth in a row.

The Hatters had trailed by as many as six in the second half, but came back to force overtime on a jumper by Register with 10 seconds left in regulation.

In overtime, McMillen's three-pointer broke a 72-72 tie with 1:17 left.? After Alain Laroche split a pair of free throws, Garfield Blair converted a putback lay-up to put Stetson ahead by four.? E.J. Gordon then converted four free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory.

For the game, the Hatters went 26-for-27 from the free throw line including a perfect 10-for-10 performance by Register.

'I see that statistic as a gauge of our focus, and we were obviously very focused tonight,' Waugh said.? 'We won this game on the offensive end.'

The victory also extended Stetson's road winning streak to five in a row, setting a new record in the Division I era.

'Winning five in a row on the road is real impressive, especially the way we started the year (0-12),' Waugh said.? 'I told the guys in the locker room I was real proud of them.'

The loss spoiled a double-double performance by LaRoche, who finished with game highs of 21 points and 12 rebounds.? Rashad Williams scored 17 points and Ryan Daugherty added 11 for the Ospreys.


McMillen finished with 13 points and Blair added 10 for the Hatters.


Stetson will go for its sixth in a row at Jacksonville at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
