Lucky Seven! Stetson Edges Campbell 81-79
February 23, 2006

DeLand, Fla. ' E.J. Gordon scored 20 points and Anthony Register added 19 as Stetson won its seventh in a row, 81-79 over visiting Campbell in an Atlantic Sun Conference game Thursday night at the Edmunds Center.

Gordon's two free throws with 1:03 left proved to be the difference as the Hatters (12-17, 10-9 A-Sun) clinched the no. 6 seed for next week's Atlantic Sun Conference tournament.

The Camels (9-17, 8-11 A-Sun) lost their third in a row despite 23 points each by Maurice Latham and Eric Smith.

'Campbell is one of the highest scoring teams in the nation, and they have a lot of confidence,' Hatters head coach Derek Waugh said.? 'So we didn't feel all that comfortable up 11 at halftime.? Two months ago, we probably would have found a way to lose this game, but now we are finding ways to win.? I was real proud of the guys tonight.'

The Camels erased a 40-29 halftime deficit in the first five minutes in the second half as Latham's bucket at the 15 minute mark tied the game at 47.? Campbell built a five-point lead with 6:50 left, but a lay-up by Gordon and a three-pointer from Register tied the contest at 64.? The rest of the game featured three more ties and seven lead changes before Gordon's late free throws put Stetson ahead for good.? Neither team managed to score in the final minute of regulation.

The Hatters' seven-game winning streak is the team's longest in 23 years.

'It feels like all of our hard work is finally paying off,' Gordon said.? 'No one knows what goes on behind closed doors, and this team has been working hard for quite a while.? I am so proud of everyone for turning this season around.'

Karl Hollingsworth hit three three-pointers and posted his first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.? Garfield Blair added 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting.

Ladell Eackles contributed 14 points for the Camels, who entered the game with the third-highest scoring average in the NCAA.? Only Duke and Memphis were ranked higher offensively than Campbell (83.7 ppg).

The Hatters shot 50 percent for the game and outrebounded the Camels 37-35.

Stetson will play its final regular season game on Saturday night as the Hatters host the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs at 7 p.m.? The five Hatter seniors will be recognized prior to the game.
