Stetson Thumps Gardner-Webb For Eighth Straight Win

DeLand, Fla. ' For a team that couldn't buy a victory early in the year, the Hatters can't seem to stop winning now.
Gabe McMillen went a perfect 8-for-8 from the floor and scored a career-high 19 points as Stetson won its eighth consecutive game, 77-65 over visiting Gardner-Webb in the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season finale Saturday night at the Edmunds Center.
Winners of 11 of their last 12 games overall, the Hatters (13-17, 11-9 A-Sun) completed the second half of the A-Sun season with a 9-1 mark.? They will enter next week's Atlantic Sun Conference tournament as the no. 6 seed and will play a yet to be determined no. 3 seed in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
'In the first five minutes of both halves, I thought we were a little emotional and didn't play well,' Hatters head coach Derek Waugh said.? 'But if you take the other 30 minutes it was probably our best game of the year.? We probably came as close to peaking in the second half as I have seen.'
The Runnin' Bulldogs (16-11, 13-7 A-Sun), which entered the game with an identical streak of 10 wins in their last 11 games, hit their first six shots and jumped out to a quick 13-0 lead.? The Hatters fought back to claim a 38-35 halftime advantage on a 18-foot jump shot by McMillen.? Stetson trailed just once in the second half, 42-41, but used a 14-0 run over a four-minute stretch to break the game open.
An emotionally charged crowd of 2677 witnessed another strong outing by senior E.J. Gordon, who led all scorers with 21 points.? Gordon moved into second place among Stetson's all-time leading scorers, while fellow senior Anthony Register, who finished with 17 points, cracked the top-10 scoring list in school history.
Tim Jennings led Gardner-Webb with 18 points, while Simon Conn chipped in 15.
The Hatters eight-game winning streak is the team's longest in 23 years.
Notes: Stetson last won eight straight games from Nov. 29 ' Dec. 29, 1982 ... The Hatters have nine (second half) come-from-behind victories in their last 12 games ... Stetson improved to 4-0 all-time vs. Gardner-Webb in DeLand ... Belmont was the only team to defeat Stetson twice this season.
