Stetson Men's Basketball Adds A.J. Smith and Tim Lang
June 1, 2006
DeLand, Fla. -- Stetson University men's basketball head coach Derek Waugh announced the signing Thursday of A.J. Smith of Cocoa Beach, Fla. (Cocoa HS) and Tim Lang of Victoria, Austrailia (Overnewton Anglican CC) to National Letters-of-Intent.
Smith, a 6-0 combo guard, was named the FHSAA Class 4A Player of the Year as a senior at Cocoa High School. He averaged 21.9 points per game and earned first-team All-State honors, helping lead his team to a 27-1 record and the Regional Finals of the state tournament. Smith scored a career-high 41 points in a game against Melbourne earlier this past season.
"A.J. is a winner in the way that he plays and the way he conducts himself on and off the court," Waugh said. "He is a quick, strong guard that can probably play two positions in college. What he did at Cocoa this year was tremendous and we expect big things from him in the future."
Lang, a 6-9, 240-pound center, transfers to Stetson from Overnewton Anglican Community College in Keilor, Victoria, Austrailia. While his school does not sponsor interscholastic basketball, Lang competes in commuity basketball, where he has been nominated for the Big V League's Rising Star and All-Star Center awards in each of the past two seasons. This year he is averaging 16.5 points and 10.8 rebounds with 11 blocks for the Keilor Thunder team.
Lang will come to Stetson with sophomore eligibility.
"Tim is a fantastic worker who plays even bigger than his 6-9 frame," Waugh said. "He has a knack for rebounding, makes himself big on defense and really shoots the ball well from outside. With added strength and conditioning this summer, he should be able to play an important role for us next year."
Smith and Lang join Mark Lohuis, Sheldon Oliver, Brandon Williams, and Olivier Dupiton as Stetson's signees for the 2006-07 academic year.
