(Buies Creek, N.C.) – Despite career highs from Garfield Blair and Kris Thomas, the Hatters could not keep up with Campbell in a 104-82 defeat at Carter Gymnasium Thursday night. Blair and Thomas combined for 46 points but six Camels put in double figures as the team shot nearly 56% from the field.
Stetson made a huge push in the second half to rally from a 15-point deficit just minutes out of the break. A 20-4 run put the Hatters ahead for the first time in the game with 12:11 to play. But the 62-61 lead would be the only advantage Stetson enjoyed. An Eric Smith three-pointer put Campbell ahead and ignited a 14-3 Camels run. The Hatters never came closer than nine points after that.
Blair stuck in a career-best 24 points on 9-for-13 shooting. Thomas’s 22 broke the 20-point barrier for the first time in his career, sinking 9-of-17 shots, including three three-pointers, before fouling out. Gabe McMillen tossed in 15.
Jonathan Rodriguez again led the way for Campbell. The freshman put in 25 while hitting all 10 of his free throw attempts. Smith also scored 25, with the majority coming from six three-point field goals. The Camels nailed 15-of-27 (55.6%) three-point shots and 29-of-34 (85.3%) free throws. Campbell’s 104 points set a record for points scored during an Atlantic Sun Conference game.
The Hatters dropped to 4-9 in the conference and 8-16 overall. Campbell improved to 6-8 and 11-13.
Stetson remains in North Carolina for a 7:00 tip-off Saturday night at Gardner-Webb.
