The victory gave the Hatters back-to-back wins for the third time this season. Stetson improved to 10-17 overall and 5-10 in the conference. UNF dropped to 2-24 and 0-15.
The visiting Ospreys took control early, building as much as a 21-12 lead at the 9:08 mark in the first half. But a 24-5 Stetson run to close out the half put the Hatters ahead 36-26 at the break. Smith, Gabe McMillen, and Mark Lohuis all canned three-pointers to fuel the run.
Though UNF never went away, Stetson rarely let the lead drop below double digits in the second half. A Chris Timberlake jumper with under a minute to play brought the Ospreys within seven, but that was the closest the visitors came to a comeback. Timberlake finished with 21 points to top UNF.
Smith’s 22 led the Hatters. Gabe McMillen filled the stat sheet with 16 points, five assists, five rebounds and three steals in 36 minutes. The senior will play his final home game Sunday evening. Tim Lang chipped in with 11 points and six rebounds in only 18 minutes.
The Hatters shot exactly 50% from the floor for the second straight game. Thanks in large part to Smith’s long-range accuracy, Stetson buried 60% of their three point shots (12-for-20).
