Jacksonville, Fla. - Stetson (3-6-0, 0-1-0) traveled to Jacksonville Friday night to take on the University of North Florida (2-6-0, 1-0-0) and fell by a score of 1-0. It was a tough loss for the Hatters after a hard-fought game.
After battling through a scoreless first half the Ospreys scored the game's lone goal just 45 seconds into the second period. Carolina Lencina picked up her second of the season from inside the box with an assist credited to Thea Linkfield.
UNF finished with a 14-5 advantage in shots and up 11-5 in corner kicks. It seemed the Stetson scoring threats were not able to get open and take advantage of their opportunities due to an aggressive defense by the Ospreys. The home team was whistled for 20 fouls in the game compared to 11 for the visitors.
Kristen Higel (St. Augustine, Fla.) led the Hatters with two shots followed by Alexis Hermosa (Orlando, Fla.), Katie Bitetto (Jacksonville, Fla.), and Natalie Simon (Lauderhill, Fla.) with one each.
"It was a very physical game", said Stetson head coach Julie Orlowski. "We played well and I was pleased with our performance, our intensity, and how hard we worked for each other, especially in the last 10 minutes."
"Sometimes Lady Luck is not on your side. We played hard, we played with heart, and we played with class. I am proud of them", she added.
The Hatters will return to Jacksonville Sunday to take on the JU Dolphins in their second A-Sun game of the season. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
