DeLand, Fla. - The NCAA on Tuesday released its annual list of schools and programs receiving Public Recognition Awards for strong Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the 2009-10 academic year; Stetson's men's golf and women's soccer teams made the list of 909 squads at 239 NCAA Division I institutions.  This is the second consecutive Public Recognition Award for Stetson men's golf and the first such honor for Stetson women's soccer.

Each year the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR).  This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.  Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship.  The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced May 24.  That announcement also will include immediate and historical penalties for low-performing teams and head coach APRs.

"Most student-athletes excel at balancing their academic and athletics commitments, yet each year there are those who perform at extraordinary levels," NCAA President Mark Emmert said. "By achieving the highest levels of academic success as a team, these young men and women truly embody what it means to be a successful NCAA student-athlete."
