DeLand, Fla. - Senior midfielder Alexis Hermosa (Orlando, Fla.) scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 89th minute, as the Stetson women's soccer team (1-0-0) rallied for a 2-1 victory over visiting FIU (0-1-0) in the season opener for both squads Friday night at the Stetson Soccer Complex. Sophomore goalkeeper Laura Seletos (New Port Richey, Fla.) earned her first career victory in net for the Hatters.
FIU controlled the run of play throughout the match as the Panthers in fact outshot the Hatters 22-8, including 12-1 in the first half. FIU got on the scoreboard in the fifth minute when April Perry launched a long ball at goal and the rebound from a Seletos save was controlled and finished by Kelly Hutchinson from point-blank range.
That score held up across halftime and into the 64th minute despite a barrage of Panther shots; freshman Caitlin O'Kennedy (Oviedo, Fla.) carried the ball forward into the box where she was clipped from behind by an FIU defender, drawing a penalty kick call from the referee. Hermosa stepped to the spot and easily finished the goal to draw the Hatters level.
Both teams traded end rushes and scoring opportunities for the next 25 minutes, but it would be Stetson who finally put it all together for the winning goal. On one such dash, Hermosa attempted to thread a ball through the middle to O'Kennedy, only to have it deflect off a Panther defender and back to her foot, whereupon she beat goalkeeper Kaitlyn Savage for the winning strike with just 1:37 showing on the clock.
Seletos made four saves for the Hatters; Savage recorded the same total for FIU. All four of Hermosa's shots ended up on goal; Nicole DiPerna led FIU with six shots on the night.
Stetson visits Florida Atlantic at 2:00 pm Sunday. A link to FAU's Game Tracker is available at GoHatters.com.
