Daytona Beach, Fla. - The Stetson women's soccer team (1-2) suffered its first loss to local NAIA powerhouse Embry-Riddle in program history on Saturday, falling 5-2 on the road to the Eagles. The Hatters had been 6-0-0 against ERAU all-time prior to the match. Senior midfielder Alexis Hermosa (Orlando, Fla.) scored her third goal of the season while freshman midfielder Caitlin O'Kennedy (Oviedo, Fla.) scored her first career goal.
ERAU struck with lightning speed, getting a Martine Olsen goal just 40 seconds into the match; she would score again in the 13th minute to give the Eagles a quick 2-0 advantage.
The Hatters would fight back with O'Kennedy's unassisted goal in the 27th minute and Hermosa's score just 15 seconds later off the re-start. Freshman midfielder Colleen O'Kennedy (Oviedo, Fla.) notched the assist on that game-tying score.
Valerie Obita gave Embry-Riddle the lead back for good in the 34th minute; she would score again in the 78th minute while Ange Durston-Ryan also netted a goal for ERAU in the 76th minute as the Eagles cruised to the 5-2 victory.
Embry-Riddle out-shot Stetson 14-8 in the match; sophomore Laura Seletos (New Port Richey, Fla.) made two saves for the Hatters and took the loss in goal. Senior Grace Turner (Fort Myers, Fla.) made her first official appearance late in the second half with eight-plus shutout minutes.
The Hatters are back in action Friday and Sunday when they travel to West Point, N.Y. for the Black Knight Classic. Stetson will take on Colgate at 4:30 pm Friday and tangle with tournament host Army at 11:00 am Sunday.
