DeLand, Fla. - Sophomore forward Alyssa Welsh (Edison, N.J.) scored her first two goals of the season, including the game-winner in the 84th minute, as the Stetson women's soccer team (2-7-1, 1-1-0 Atlantic Sun) knocked off visiting North Florida (4-7-1, 0-2-0 A-Sun) Sunday at the Stetson Soccer Complex. The victory ended an eight-match winless streak for the Hatters and returned them to .500 in conference play.

Stetson found itself trailing almost immediately when UNF's Keara Murphy dribbled around charging senior goalkeeper Grace Turner (Fort Myers, Fla.) and tapped home a Carolina Lencina pass just 1:14 into the match. The Hatters would keep grinding and were rewarded with the equalizer in the 27th minute as Welsh collected a loose ball and lofted a shot into the upper right corner of the net.

The score remained tied 1-1 late into the second half. Stetson would finally break the stalemate in the 72nd minute when freshman midfielder Alex Stanojev (Gainesville, Fla.) sent in a cross that Ospreys goalkeeper Rachel Beninati knocked down but could not control; the ball settled at the foot of Hatters sophomore forward Sammie Matthews (Palmetto, Fla.), who knocked it in lower middle.

UNF refused to go down quietly, however, turning a Stetson defensive miscue into a Lauren Hopfensperger goal with 10:58 remaining in regulation that tied the score again 2-2. Finally in the 84th minute it was Welsh again striking from distance, putting touch passes from freshman forward Katie O'Kennedy (Oviedo, Fla.) and senior forward Courtney Jenista (Pensacola, Fla.) just inside the lower left corner for the match-winning goal.

Stetson won for the first time since its regular season opener over FIU on August 19 and scored three goals in a match for the first time since a 5-1 win over Mercer on October 3, 2010. Turner recorded six saves to earn her first career victory in goal.

The Hatters are back in action at home Saturday, October 1 at 7:00 pm against defending A-Sun regular season champion FGCU. Live Stats and Hatter Vision will be available at
