DeLand, Fla. - The Stetson women's soccer team battled hard all night against a visiting Florida Gulf Coast squad that had not lost an Atlantic Sun Conference match since October 16, 2009 but in the end succumbed 1-0 to the Eagles. The Hatters dropped to 2-8-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the A-Sun with the loss while FGCU improved to 7-3-2 (2-0-1 A-Sun).
The Eagles controlled the run of play throughout the match, besieging the Stetson defense and senior goalkeeper Grace Turner (Fort Myers, Fla.) all night with 20 shots to Stetson's eight. Turner made seven saves as she and the Hatters turned away nearly every FGCU opportunity, but early in the second half (late 54th minute) a Brittany Burt corner kick found its way to the head of Kathleen Hunter, who popped the ball over Turner and the goal line for the score.
FGCU out-shot the Hatters 13-3 in the first half but Stetson caught up somewhat within a 7-5 margin in the second half. Freshman midfielder Colleen O'Kennedy (Oviedo, Fla.) put three shots on goal and freshman forward Alex Stanojev (Gainesville, Fla.) got one ball on net, but Eagles goalkeeper Stephanie Powers scooped them all up for her four saves on the match.
Stetson is back in action Friday, October 7 when it travels to A-Sun rival Kennesaw State for a 7:00 pm kickoff. This will be the first match the Hatters have ever played in the state-of-the-art KSU Soccer Stadium that will be hosting the 2011 NCAA Women's College Cup in December. Live Stats, if available, will be linked at GoHatters.com; the match can be seen online through ASun.TV.
