Kennesaw, Ga. - The Stetson women's soccer team hung in on the road for 70+ minutes but was undone by two late goals in a 2-0 loss at Kennesaw State in Atlantic Sun Conference action Friday evening at the KSU Soccer Stadium. The Hatters drop to 2-9-1 overall and 1-3-0 in the A-Sun with the loss while the Owls improve to 6-6-1, 2-3-0 A-Sun.
Kennesaw State blitzed the Hatters defense with shots and scoring opportunities all night, ending up with a 23-8 advantage in shots, a 14-7 edge in corner kicks and a 10-2 lead in shots on goal. Freshman Katie O'Kennedy (Oviedo, Fla.) and sophomore Kait Jones (DeLand, Fla.) were the only Hatters who managed to put a shot on frame, both of which were saved by Owls goalkeeper Mel Hutto.
The Hatters turned away all Owl attacks in the first half and much of the second half, but disaster finally struck Stetson in the 71st minute when Kennesaw State teammates Shelby Crosby and Katrina Frost worked the ball to the foot of Brittany Vining, who one-timed it home for the first goal of the match.
Senior goalkeeper Grace Turner (Fort Myers, Fla.) made seven saves for Stetson before being red-carded in the 82nd minute. Sophomore Laura Seletos (New Port Richey, Fla.) came in to face the resulting penalty kick, in a situation eerily similar to one that happened September 9 against Chattanooga. Kelsey Barr drilled the penalty kick home to give KSU a 2-0 lead that would hold up until the final horn sounded.
Stetson is back in action at 2:00 pm Sunday when it visits longtime A-Sun rival Mercer. Live Stats links are available at GoHatters.com while the match can be seen on ASun.TV.
