Macon, Ga. - The Stetson women's soccer team (2-9-2, 1-3-1 Atlantic Sun) picked up an important point in the conference standings with a 2-2 tie at defending A-Sun tournament champion Mercer (7-6-1, 1-4-1 A-Sun) Sunday afternoon at Bear Field. Senior midfielder Alexis Hermosa (Orlando, Fla.) and sophomore forward Alyssa Welsh (Edison, N.J.) scored for the Hatters.

Hermosa got Stetson on the scoreboard first with a goal in the 12th minute as a Mercer foul allowed her to whistle a free kick low past a wall of Bears defenders and into the net. That strike was the team-leading fifth goal of the season for Hermosa. Mercer came back 10 minutes later to tie the match when Casey Barrett and Emerald Phillips played a long service that carried past sophomore goalkeeper Laura Seletos (New Port Richey, Fla.) and to the foot of Olivia Tucker, who knocked it home for her eighth goal of the season.

The Hatters and Bears went to halftime tied 1-1, but it would be Mercer that seized the early second half momentum. Patricia-Anne Upson headed a loose ball in the box into the Stetson net in the 55th minute for a 2-1 Bears advantage. Stetson refused to go away quietly, however, as less than two and a half minutes later, a near side cross deflected off a Mercer defender right to Welsh, who buried the shot that tied the match up 2-2.

The remainder of regulation and both 10-minute overtime periods passed without any more scoring as the match ended in a 2-2 draw and one point awarded in the A-Sun standings to both sides. Stetson and Mercer remain tied for eighth place in the league with four points apiece.

Seletos made four saves, twice as many as her Mercer counterpart Nikki Atkinson, and fought off a 14-7 Mercer shots advantage to help her team get on the bus with the tie.

Stetson returns home for its final homestand of the season next weekend. The Hatters host league-leading ETSU at 7:00 pm Friday, October 14 and celebrate Senior Day at 1:00 pm Sunday, October 16 against USC Upstate. Live Stats and Hatter Vision will be available at GoHatters.com.
