Nashville, Tenn. - The Stetson women's soccer team's hopes for qualifying for a ninth consecutive Atlantic Sun Conference tournament were dealt a serious blow with Friday's 1-0 loss at Belmont. The Hatters dropped to 3-11-2 overall and 2-5-1 in the A-Sun with one match to play while the Bruins improved to 7-7-1 (4-3-1 A-Sun) and clinched their own place in the postseason.
Senior goalkeeper Grace Turner (Fort Myers, Fla.), who made four saves, and the Stetson defense did their best to keep the Hatters in it all night. The match was scoreless at halftime, but Dani Stolt eventually put home her third goal of the season 2:43 into the second period for what would prove to be the only score of the match. Rachel Schmidt had the assist on Stolt's goal; Nicole Berner made five saves to preserve the shutout for Belmont.
Even worse than the loss for Stetson was the news that Kennesaw State had held on for a 1-1 draw with ETSU 284 miles to the east in Johnson City; as a result, the Hatters now only have one way into the A-Sun tournament with just Sunday's match at Lipscomb left on the schedule. Stetson must beat the Lady Bisons and hope for ETSU to defeat Mercer and for USC Upstate to tie or beat Kennesaw State.
Furthermore, Stetson must make up a -3 goal differential with Mercer (e.g. Stetson wins by 2, Mercer loses by 1; Stetson wins by 1, Mercer loses by 2; etc.) Those results would allow the Hatters to win the tiebreaker for the #6 seed with Mercer at 13 points in the league. Any other scenario would leave Stetson on the sidelines for the postseason for the first time since 2002.
Stetson visits Lipscomb at 2:00 pm ET (1:00 pm local CT) Sunday; the match is slated for broadcast on ASun.TV with a link to Live Stats available at GoHatters.com.
