Stetson (0-1-1) rallied from a two-goal deficit early in the second half, and survived an FAU (1-0-1) onslaught which saw the Owls out-shoot the Hatters, 23-11.
“I’m so proud of this group,” said head coach Manoj Khettry. “It’s a hot day, so hot that it warrants water breaks during play. We were down two goals on the road and we never quit. We feel like we won the game. Today our freshmen learned a lot about heart, and effort, and what it means to be a team and play for one another.”
FAU opened the scoring when Yazmin Ongtengo found the back of the net in the 28th minute. Claire Emslie was credited with the assist.
The game remained a 1-0 affair as play moved into the second half, The Owls upped their lead to 2-0 in the 53rd minute when Taylor Townsend converted a penalty kick.
Stetson answered quickly, scoring its first goal of the game and the season when Zaccheo scored in the 58th minute, with assist coming from Pavao.
It took less than three minutes for the Hatters to tie the game, when Pavao beat FAU goalkeeper Sydney Drinkwater on a breakaway in the 62nd minute.
The Hatters return to action when they host St. Leo, 7 p.m., Friday at the Athletic Training Center.
