Stetson University unveiled its new athletics mascot, John B., on Jan. 20 and, in the excitement of the moment also recognized the finalists and winner of the mascot contest that got the ball rolling.

The five finalists from the mascot contest were all recognized during a second half presentation. Three of the five finalists were on hand to receive a new Stetson hat from the Stetson Company as a thank you for their participation.

The overall winner of the mascot contest was James Geiger, a Stetson University graduate (1959) and also a graduate of the Stetson Law School. His submission to the contest, which was titled "Sheriff John B" was the unanimous choice of the mascot selection committee.

In addition to receiving an authentic Stetson hat, which ironically matched the one he was wearing at the game, Mr. Geiger received a two-night vacation stay at the Swan & Dolphin Hotel at Walt Disney World.

The other contest finalists on hand for John B.'s debut were Paul Corll whose nomination was simply called "Stetson Hatters", and Kellie Redd Steward, whose submission was called "General John B.".

Two other finalists were unable to attend the debut performance of John B., but will also receive authentic Stetson hats. They were Jeffrey Sunman who submitted "The Cub" and Candy Light, whose submission was called "Quincy".

Stetson athletics would like to thanks all of the people who submitted ideas, drawings and suggestions during the mascot contest. The entries were creative and showed the passion that Stetson fans and alumni have for the Hatters.

The debut performance of John B. was made possible in part by sponsorship support from the Stetson Company and the Daytona Beach News-Journal.
