Linda’s Run for the Dream is the second annual ME STRONG event that will take place this Saturday, Feb. 2, at 8 a.m.  It is a 5K Walk/Run in DeLand, Fla. with proceeds going towards the ME STRONG mission of battling cancer.

The event came about after Linda Ryan learned that she had recurring cervical cancer in July 2011, at the age of 43.  Shortly before she learned of her diagnoses, Ryan had successfully completed her first marathon.

“It is my belief that it is no coincidence that I began this journey fighting cancer in the best shape of my life,” Ryan said in a statement on her website.

In March 2012, Ryan found out that she was cancer-free after eight rounds of chemotherapy. Her doctors agreed that the physical shape Ryan was in played a significant role in the success of her treatment.

There will be about 115 student-athletes from Stetson University that will be participating or volunteering as a way to support the cause. Stetson’s entire baseball team will all run in the event again this year, as they did last year.

“This event is an awesome way to get involved with the DeLand and Stetson community while supporting a very good cause,” said senior pitcher Joseph Dye.

Other teams show their support through volunteering by handing out water and cheering on the runners as they complete the 5K. This will be the second year that the Women’s Golf team volunteers at the event.

“It was nice to be able to give back to someone in the community of DeLand,” said Ryan Ashburn, a junior on the women’s golf team.

Online Registration is available through January 30 through the event website,

The entry fee is $30 on race day with $5 off entrants under 18 years old. Check and cash are only accepted on race day.

Packet pick-up will also be available from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, as well as 6:45 a.m. on Saturday prior to the race.

Last year Ryan set a goal of 300 participants and was taken aback when an astonishing 900 participants arrived for race day. This year she has set a goal of 1100 participants.

The course begins at 123 West Indiana Ave.
