Assistant Coach Joanna "JJ" Payette

January 9, 2011 - Lots and lots of awesome things are happening around Patricia Wilson Field.

  • 1. Our *NEW* scoreboard and videoboard have been installed. AMAZING looking, if I do say so myself. Many might not know the story behind the loss of our scoreboard last April. A lightning strike hit in the middle of the night just beside one of the field light poles along the first base side at PWF. Luckily no one was injured in the storm and strike; however, the complex sustained a large, LARGE amount of damage: small fires in all three buildings, electronic failures, and extreme electrical wire disintegration specifically including the scoreboard and one of the field lights. The major challenge was that we were hosting the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament in less than two weeks. The concrete pole directly impacted from the strike had to be removed and a new one installed. With one day remaining, we finished the task thanks in large part to the willingness and ingenuity of Coach Griffin, George Marshall, Stetson Facilities Management, and many Stetson departments (finance, purchasing, and risk management to name a few), as well as several friends of the program that stepped to the plate.
  • 2. I would like to congratulate Coach Griffin and Coach Bataille on being honored several weekends ago at their alma mater, Winthrop University. In celebration of Winthrop's 125th Anniversary, several "Teams of Distinction" were recognized including the 1987 Softball Team which won the first Big South championship for Winthrop. Coach Bataille (then Glasscock) was a member of that team while Coach Griffin was the head coach. More info on their feat:
  • 3. George Marshall, our Field Maintenance Technician, retired at the end of January. We've enjoyed the past five years with George and we will miss him dearly! Coach Griffin and the girls threw George a "Happy Retirement" bar-b-que complete with gifts, Coach Griffin's world-famous bar-b-que, and delicious cakes made by #19 Grace Turner.
  • 4. We just had picture day on Sunday!!! Sporting their new black uniforms, the Hatters looked fabulous. Keep an eye out for our schedule cards and posters; they will be circulating around DeLand in the near future.

It all begins Friday with Boston College, Michigan State, and the University of Tennessee!

January 11, 2011 - It's a great day to be a Hatter!  Actually, every day is a great day to be a Hatter.  As campus begins to fill again, let's recap the fall semester in brevity.

We bid adieu to six members of the class of 2010: Amy Joyce (now Mrs. Amy Krazeise), Katie Lawrence, Amanda Lindsey, Jessica Lokeinsky, Nicole Peltz, and Megan Voeller.  All six were an integral part of the program for four years.  All six graduated on time and all six are off to change lives as they take on the world!

This fall we welcomed in five new Hatters: three freshmen (Taylor Cochran, Chrissy Morello, and Meredith Owen), one sophomore (Camille Czarnecki), and one red shirt sophomore (Alissa Oddo).  We also happily retained our returning team of seniors (Rachel Lowe, Katelyn Perna, Jill Semento, and Jesse Tucker), juniors (Carolyn Boyd, Brittany Knipp, Chelsey Trotto, and Grace Turner), and sophomores (Jordan Cleghorn, Tara Formisano, Lindsey Guenther, Courtney Gunby and Chelsea Whalley).

The Hatters had a WONDERFUL academic semester in the fall.  We are looking forward to more intellectual as well as athletic amazingness this spring semester.

Classes begin Wednesday and full team practice begins Friday.

Reminder: Opening Weekend - Stetson Lead-Off Classic with Tennessee, Michigan State, Boston College, and YOUR Stetson Hatters.

More blogging to come!
