Nashville, Tenn. - After winning a pair and securing the A-Sun regular season title on Saturday the Hatters experienced a bit of a letdown Sunday and fell 9-3 in the final game of the series. Stetson is now 39-13 overall and 22-5 in conference play while Lipscomb improved to 19-32 and 10-17 in the league.
Stetson's offensive highlight came from the bat of Nick Rickles (Loxahatchee, Fla.). After Robert Crews (Port Charlotte, Fla.) reached base on a single up the middle Rickles stepped in and blasted a home run deep over the 400-foot marker in center field. According to Lipscomb press box personnel it is the only home run hit to dead center at Dugan Field this season.
Rickles and Crews, along with Jeff Simpson (Valrico, Fla.) and Trey Blackman (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) finished the game with two hits each. Rickles led the team in runs batted in with two.
Stetson starter Austin Perez (Loxahatchee, Fla.) lasted 3.1 innings and took the loss falling to 2-1 on the season. He gave up three runs on eight hits. Lipscomb starter Chris Nunn picked up the win raising his record to 3-4. Chad Fromm tossed the final four innings of the game for the Bisons and earned his second save of 2011.
"A very disappointing game today", said Stetson head coach Pete Dunn. "I felt that we would come out today and play with a lot of intensity knowing that we could get number 40 but we didn't do it."
"If we don't make the routine plays we don't win. We had opportunities to get out of some innings today and didn't do it. We can not go into the post season and be successful if we don't make the routine plays", he added.
The Hatters return to DeLand for a Tuesday night game against UCF at 6:30 p.m. and then a weekend series against Belmont to finish up the regular season. The Belmont games are scheduled for Thursday and Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Stetson fans can see the games on Hatter Vision at GoHatters.com with Bill Topping calling the action.
