Stetson University’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee raised over $500 during the 2013 spring semester for Relay for Life, held April 6th at Rinker Field .
All proceeds gathered from the SAAC fundraisers and the Relay for Life event were donated to the American Cancer Society.
The fundraisers included a two-week long penny war challenge, hosting a movie night on April 7th at Melching Field, online donations from the SAAC team’s Relay for Life web page, and in-person donations on campus and at the Relay for Life event itself.
“SAAC chose to get involved in Relay for Life so that as Stetson student-athletes, we could show our support for the fight against cancer,” said Stetson University freshman and indoor volleyball player Shannon Craighead. “As athletes, we make up a large part of the student body at Stetson, and our involvement in the cause can generate a lot of extra support from the Stetson community.”
As SAAC’s Relay for Life team captain, Craighead said she ran for Kendall Bayne, a high school junior in her hometown who was diagnosed with Adrenal Cortical Carcinoma almost two and a half years ago.
“[Bayne] was and still is a bright light in the community and I would do anything to see her become cancer-free,” Craighead said.
The movie night at Melching Field concluded SAAC’s fundraising events for the 2012-13 school year.
