The Stetson women’s tennis team extended its winning streak to five matches on Tuesday, defeating visiting Eastern Michigan 6-1 at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.

“The team played an excellent match today against a quality opponent,” Stetson Director of Tennis Pierre Pilote said. “The intensity was very good from the first point of doubles.”

The Hatters got out to their good start by winning two of three doubles matches to earn the first point against the Eagles. Senior Diana Bukajeva and freshman Isabella Fernandez improved to 4-1 in doubles with an 8-6 win at the number one position to clinch the point.

Senior Lindsey Cable and sophomore Eveline Lepinay won 8-3 at number two doubles to help Stetson earn the early 1-0 lead.

After the short intermission, Bukajeva made quick work of Klara Supejova at number one singles, winning 6-1, 6-0 to make it 2-0 in favor of the Hatters. Fernandez was next to win for Stetson, topping Nino Mebuke 6-3, 6-2 at number three to extend the lead to 3-0.

Lepinay, inserted into the singles lineup late, clinched the victory for the Hatters. The sophomore won 6-4, 6-1 against EMU’s Daphne Friedrichs at the number five position.

“It was a significant improvement in the overall performance in comparison to our FAU match, and this was against a very good opponent,” Pilote said. “Eastern Michigan will do very well this year. They are talented and fight to the last point.”

Cable and sophomore Andrea Crespo also won to give Stetson the 6-1 victory. Cable downed Zsofia Biro 7-5, 6-3 at number six, while Crespo defeated Diana Davitaia 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) at the number two position.

“The fact that they held a 6-1 advantage in the all-time series against us makes this win even more noteworthy,” said Pilote.

The Hatters, winners of their last five matches since opening with a road loss at #24 Florida State, will next play on Thursday. Stetson hosts Oakland at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center at 2:30 p.m.
