Daytona, Fla. – The Stetson University cross country team dusted off its running shoes and made the short drive over to Daytona this past weekend to compete in the Embry Riddle Spikes Classic.

The Hatter men and women took part in the event’s 5K, pitting them against runners from schools across the region.  Both races took place April 4, and saw freshman Clarissa Consol finish the highest among all Stetson runners.

Consol took home second place honors with a time of 18:16.98, securing eight points for her team. The highest men’s finisher was fellow freshman Joe Beery, who crossed the finish line with a 16:41.10 time, good enough for 19th place.

Other Stetson runners competing in the 5,000 meters Friday, were Adrienne DeVita, Samantha Hicks and Amanda Spring, who finished sixth, seventh and eighth respectively in the women’s heat. DeVita (19:33.70), Hicks (19:47.34) and Spring (20:08.43) each earned team points for the Hatters with 3, 2, and 1 in succession.

Jessica Cosgrove (21:03.50) and Emily Nolen (21:05.69) were 13th and 14th, while Daniella Moreno (21:31.46) and Christine Iselsy (22:40.84) brought home the pack at 18th and 25th respectively. The Stetson women finished the Spikes Classic with 14 total team points and in 12th place overall.

On the men’s side of the things, following in Beery’s footsteps was sophomore Andrew Townes, who finished 26th with a time of 17:05.56. Austyn Finnk (18:56.00) and James Welch III (20:18.46) bookended each other as the final Stetson runners to cross the finish line, as the pair finished 31st and 33rd respectively.
