|Blog: Tournament Time by Janelle Mills (Part I)|
As soon as we got back there was a bit of a welcoming committee with various staff, students, athletes, and other Stetson affiliates that greeted us as we got off the bus. That meant a lot to the team because we knew that people went out of their way to be at the Edmunds Center when we got back. This was more than just a conference championship win for us. We know that Stetson is now representing the entire Atlantic Sun Conference in the NCAA tournament and it's good to know that we have support.
After winning our conference championship we were given a few days off to relax and catch up on missed work. It also gave us time to start working on assignments we would likely miss because of the upcoming travel days.
All of Stetson has been extremely supportive and proud of us. It is amazing to come back and feel so received by the campus. It is cool to be recognized for any type of accomplishment especially one of this nature.
Honestly, I think my team and I are still riding on the championship high. I don't how many times we've all watched the game again in our free time. It's a moment I'll never forget. For most us, the win sank in one minute before the game ended. We never had a doubt in our minds that we wouldn't win the game. But with about a minute left, it just became real. There are no other words to describe it. It was just REAL.
Practice has been like many other practices that we have. We focus on what we need to do to get better. Defense and rebounding is always a major focus in our practices, as well as execution. Winning the championship does not really change our practices. We run hard, practice hard, and play hard. It's the best way to prepare for any game and fortunately is a habit of ours. The only difference in our practices is the energy within the team and coaching staff. We are all excited about going to the NCAA tournament and having an opportunity that many other schools missed out on. It is a humbling experience to say the least.
Tomorrow night is a big night for the team. All of us have been counting down the days to the Selection Show. Being a part of this process is a reminder that we deserve to be here and that we have worked just as hard, if not harder to be put in this position. Coach Bria has emphasized many times that this is not about who we play but how we play. It is an attitude that we have all adopted. We have proven that we can play with any team so now it's just about going out there and getting it done.
