DeLand, Fla. - The remarkable season put together by the Stetson women's basketball team did not go unnoticed by league coaches in the All-Atlantic Sun Conference Team voting as sophomore guard Victoria McGowan (Inkster, Mich.) was named Second Team All-Conference and freshman forward Sasha Sims (Fayetteville, Ga.) landed on the A-Sun All-Freshman Team on Tuesday. They are the first All-Atlantic Sun honorees of the Lynn Bria Era.
McGowan, who leads the Hatters in scoring (14.1 ppg), assists (133) and steals (74) and ranks third in rebounding (5.7 rpg), is the first Stetson women's basketball player to earn either First or Second Team league honors since Janene Maclin in 2006-07. McGowan is in her first year of active duty after transferring from Bowling Green in summer 2009 and earned A-Sun Newcomer of the Week laurels twice this season.
Sims, Stetson's first All-Freshman Team pick since current senior guard Tierra Brown (Orlando, Fla.) in 2007-08, averages 9.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game with 22 steals, 18 blocked shots and a 37.8 shooting percentage from beyond the arc (fifth in the A-Sun). She was named A-Sun Newcomer of the Week for December 28 after scoring 17 points in just 17 minutes in a win over Maine.
The Hatters finished the regular season 17-12 overall and 13-7 in the A-Sun for their first winning season since 2004-05 and their highest win total since 2000-01. Their +11 win improvement from last season is the second-highest in the nation and earned them the #2 seed in this week's General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun Conference Championships.
Stetson will face #7 Kennesaw State at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the quarterfinals. ASun.TV will be free for the quarterfinals with the semifinals and championship game broadcasts carried on CSS. Live Stats links will also be available at GoHatters.com.
