Nashville, Tenn. - Freshman guard Jama Sharp (Mooresville, Ind.) knocked down five of six three-point attempts and went six for six from the free throw line for a career-high 21 points to lead the Stetson women's basketball team (16-3, 7-0 Atlantic Sun) to a 74-63 win at Lipscomb (3-14, 1-5 A-Sun) Thursday evening at Allen Arena. The Hatters extended their school record winning streak to 10 games and hit a school record-tying 12 three-pointers on the night.
Stetson leaped out to an 18-8 lead in the first six minutes before the Lady Bison drew nearly level with a 10-2 temporary advange, holding the Hatters off the scoreboard for nearly five and a half minutes. Sharp started to take over at that point, however, knocking down three trifectas to lead the Hatters on an 18-4 burst in a 4:20 span and forcing a Lipscomb timeout with Stetson up 38-22 with 3:20 left until intermission.
The Hatters went into the locker room ahead 41-28 as Sharp drilled another three with 16 seconds left; they would not lead by less than 11 points the rest of the ballgame. Sharp beat her old career high of nine points by halftime, scoring 12 in the first 20 minutes; freshman forward Cherisse Burris (Blue Springs, Mo.) added 11 for Stetson.
Stetson kept the pressure on Lipscomb in the second half, rolling ahead first by 15 points, then 20, finally bringing the lead to a game-high 23 points on a Burris free throw with 5:43 to go. The Lady Bison fought hard to the final whistle, draining three three-pointers in the final two and a half minutes and out-scoring Stetson 22-10 in the final 5:43, but the Hatters had done all the damage they needed long before, particularly from long range.
The Hatters buried 12 of 25 three-point attempts (48 percent) in the game, tying a school record for triples that they originally set in a 74-72 win at Winthrop earlier this season on November 20, 2011. Sharp, who sealed the win with six free throws in the final minutes, scored all 21 of the team's bench points. Burris finished with 15 points on six of eight shooting with sophomore forward Sasha Sims (Fayetteville, Ga.) helping out on the scoreboards and backboards with 15 points and six rebounds.
Junior guard Shanasa Sanders (Jacksonville, Fla.) completed the quartet in double figures with 11 points while junior guard Victoria McGowan (Inkster, Mich.) made up for a quiet night offensively (eight points) with a game-high five assists.
Starting guards Hannah Phillips and Anna Bowers led Lipscomb in defeat with 15 and 13 points, respectively, with Sasha Robinson and O'Neisha Smith tying for the Lady Bison rebounding lead with five apiece.
The Hatters, who clinched a winning season this evening before the second semester has even begun with their 16th win of 2011-12, conclude their stay in the Music City with a 6:00 pm ET (5:00 pm local CT) tip-off Saturday at Belmont.
