DeLand, Fla. - A pair of home victories over the weekend sent the Stetson women's basketball team (18-5, 9-2 Atlantic Sun) back on the way up the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Poll. The January 31 edition saw the Hatters rise two spots to 21st, within three of their season-high position. Stetson has been ranked in this Top 25 for five consecutive weeks.
Playing in the friendly confines of the Edmunds Center, Stetson defeated Kennesaw State 73-68 on Thursday and knocked off longtime rival Mercer 68-46 on Saturday. A pair of nearly identical stat lines keyed each victory as junior guard Victoria McGowan (Inkster, Mich.) notched exactly 16 points and eight assists in each game, adding eight rebounds against KSU, while freshman forward Cherisse Burris (Blue Springs, Mo.) tallied exactly 12 points and six rebounds in both contests.
The Hatters received 148 points from the 31 voting head coaches, ahead of Oral Roberts, Missouri Valley Conference leader Wichita State, Chattanooga and Big Sky Conference leader Idaho State. Stetson is one of two A-Sun squads ranked this week, joining #3 FGCU.
Stetson visits the River City twice later this week, tipping off at 7:00 pm Thursday against Jacksonville at Swisher Gymnasium and facing North Florida at 4:30 pm Saturday at UNF Arena in search of season sweeps in both series.
