The Stetson women’s basketball team looks for its 20th win of the season Thursday night as the Hatters host the Kennesaw State Owls at the Edmunds Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. and the game will be the front end of a Stetson basketball doubleheader.
With just two games remaining in the regular season, the Hatters (19-7, 12-4 A-Sun) find themselves in third place in the conference standings, just one game behind Mercer for the critical second spot heading into postseason play. The number one and number two seeds in the Atlantic Sun tournament play their quarterfinal games on Wednesday, allowing the winning teams to have a day off on Thursday before the semifinal round begins on Friday.
The third through sixth seeds play their quarterfinal rounds on Thursday and would have to win three games in three days to become conference champions.
"We have to play well on Thursday and we have to finish up well at home," Stetson coach Lynn Bria said after the FGCU game Saturday. "The next two games are real important to us and hopefully we can build some momentum going into the conference tournament."
The Owls (7-20, 3-12) are still trying lock up a postseason berth and currently sit one game ahead of Lipscomb for the eighth and final tournament seed.
Stetson defeated Kennesaw earlier this season on the road, but it took a huge defensive effort over the final 11 minutes of the game to allow the Hatters to come away with a 57-52 victory. Victoria McGowan scored a career-high 33 points in that contest, tying the school single-game record for most points in a road contest.
A win Thursday night would give Stetson its third consecutive 20-win season and its fifth 20-win season all-time. The Hatters won a school-record 23 games last season, and posted exactly 20 wins in 2010-11.
