The Stetson women's basketball team learned Tuesday that it will open the 2013-14 season against NCAA Sweet 16 participant Oklahoma on Friday, Nov. 8 in Norman, Okla., in the first round of the Preseason WNIT Tournament. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. Eastern Time.
While Stetson (24-9 in 2012-13) and Oklahoma (24-11) have never met on the hardwood, both teams got a good look at each other in the NCAA Tournament this past March. The Hatters and Sooners each participated in the Columbus Regional, where Oklahoma posted wins over Central Michigan and UCLA to advance to the Sweet 16. The Sooners finished the season ranked 23rd in the USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll.
"It will be fun, we will see where we are right away," Stetson head coach Lynn Bria said. "(Oklahoma) will have a real good veteran team because I don't think they lost very much from last year. We scouted them and we saw them in person, and they will pretty much be the same team if not better. Arguably they could be the best team in the WNIT field."
The winner of the Stetson-Oklahoma game will advance to play the winner of the Wichita State-IPFW game on either Nov. 10 or 11. Teams that lose in the first two rounds will play consolation games on the second weekend, Nov. 15-16. All games are hosted by participating schools.
According to the WNIT, the consolation bracket will be re-drawn to form new matchups based on the geography of teams involved, who can/cannot host, recent history of teams, etc. The consolation bracket will be released Nov. 10 after all of the first round games are complete. The Preseason WNIT tournament features a three-game guarantee format.
Teams that remain in the winner's bracket will compete in the semifinals on Nov. 14. The championship game will be nationally televised LIVE in HD on CBS Sports Network at 4 pm ET on Sunday, Nov. 17.
Stetson's full schedule will be released at a later date.
