DELAND, Fla. – The Hatter Women's Rowing team raced a very deep and strong Wesleyan University team Saturday, in the second Stetson Sprint, but came up short in four total races.

Stetson raced two 8's against the Cardinals two times over the standard 2,000 meter sprint distance on Lake Beresford.

"The Wesleyan Crews looked really good and took off from the start and did not look back," said Coach Mark Wilson. “They looked really together and did a very good job of controlling the races."

‎The Hatters’ V8I raced first and had a solid start but were a half of a boat back of the Cardinals by the 250 meter mark. The Wesleyan boat took that early lead and continued to over stroke Stetson, ending the race with multiple boat lengths.

"The Hatter Crew is very young and had two first semester walk-on athletes in the V8I boat," Wilson explained. "These athletes gained valuable racing experience and did a very good job with the more experienced rowers."

The V8II boat also raced well but did not have the boat speed or the set to compete with the higher rating crew from Wesleyan out of Middletown, Conn.  In the V8II race, the Cardinals had a third boat that also topped the Hatter II boat.

"The situation was very similar in the V8II races as the V8I race, with Wesleyan taking off the line first and not giving up the lead at any point," Said Wilson. “The V8II, similar to the V8I, boat had several first semester walk-on rowers filling in seats and gaining valuable experience on the race course.”

The V8II boat was beaten by Wesleyan by a margin of approximately 30 seconds, but was faster in the second race, which Wilson said is a good sign for the athletes.

The Hatters begin conference rowing on Saturday, March 22, when Jacksonville and Drake University visit Lake Beresford for the final home race of the season.  Racing at the third Stetson Sprint begins at 9 a.m. and will conclude at 11 a.m. in DeLand.
